Product variants - Guide 4: Changing variants after import
You can safely change how variants look in your store, but not which variants exist. Changes that keep the product ID and inventory item ID are safe. Changes that create or remove IDs break the connection for those variants.
Changes you make in your webshop
| Change | Safe? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Change the order of variants | Yes | The IDs stay the same, so the connection stays. |
| Rename an option or option value (for example "Colour" to "Color") | Yes | The IDs stay the same, so the connection stays. |
| Change the product handle | Yes | The IDs stay the same, so the connection stays. |
| Add a new variant by hand | No | The new variant isn't connected to a supplier. Droppery can't sync its stock or forward its orders. |
| Delete a connected variant | No | Its connection is gone. Droppery stops syncing it, and it can't be ordered through Droppery. |
| Combine products into variants, or split variants into products | No | New IDs are created and the connection breaks. See Guide 5. |
What happens if I manually create a new Shopify variant?
The new variant gets its own ID, which isn't linked to any supplier product. Droppery can't update its stock or price. If a customer orders it, the order isn't forwarded to a supplier. Don't sell variants that you have added by hand.
What happens if I delete a connected Shopify variant?
The connection for that variant ends. The other variants of the product stay connected. If you want to offer the variant again, you can import it again yourself.
- Go to Products in your Droppery account.
- Select the variant you deleted in your webshop.
- Click Actions > Delete. This only removes it in Droppery. Only do this for variants you've already deleted in your webshop.
- Import the variant again as usual. It appears in the same variant group as before.
Changes the supplier makes
- The supplier adds a new variant to an existing product. You can import the new variant as usual. It appears automatically in the same variant group as the other variants.
- The supplier removes a variant. Droppery disconnects that variant from the supplier. Stock and prices stop syncing, and orders for it can't be forwarded. To avoid orders you can't fulfil, remove the variant from your webshop.
Before you change anything
- Check the product in the Products section of your Droppery account.
- Make sure the change keeps all IDs the same.
- If you're unsure, contact support first.
